Though temperatures are cooling down a bit, the surfing lifestyle is still heating up during late September in Ericeira, Portugal.
Portugal’s national Bodyboarding circuit (Circuito Nacional Bodyboard Open 2011) recently held its first stage in Ericeira. Hey, it’s not quite surfing; the riders just lie on their stomachs, hold on for dear life and hope for the best. Nonetheless, they sometimes manage some pretty cool tricks and twists. All kidding aside, like standard surfing, bodyboarding originates in the Hawaiian Islands and actually predates stand-up surfing by hundreds of years.
The competition in Ericeira resulted in two winners (surprise!) of the first stage. Gastão Entrudo, who has competed on the bodyboarding world championships circuit, but has never won the Portuguese Nationals, came out on top in the men’s division. In the female division, 12-time national Portuguese champion Rita Pires won yet again.

In Ericeira cultural news, get ready for another great concert on Friday, September 30th at Quiksilver Boardriders. Quiksilver presents English singer-songwriter Charlotte O’Connor. Charlotte, who also has a clothing line by Quiksilver, is performing at several venues of the surfing company around the globe.
For more info on the fashionable British songstress, including photos (she’s pretty good-looking) music and videos, check out her homepage at charlotteoconnor.com, her myspace page (yes, some people still have them) and if you are not too upset about the recent changes to the feed, feel free to visit her facebook profile.
