OK, It’s only mid January. We are currently in the dead of winter, as they say. We dream of summer, but it seems a long way off.
In Portugal however, summer is always around the corner. Despite chilly nights and a bit of rain and wind, the sun in Portugal is never too far away. On a winter’s day (I am either quoting The Mamas and the Papas’ California Dreamin’ or Simon and Garfunkel’s I Am a Rock – take your pick) it can fool you into thinking you are in the midst of summer without work, school or a care in the world.
As far as surfing goes, winter in Portugal is go. This was proved by the return of European pro (yes, Réunion Island is technically ‘Europe’, no matter what your geographical logic may say) Jeremy Flores, who surfed killer waves in Ericeira during the Christmas break.
It is telling that Flores chose Portugal to get back in the swing of things after being sidelined by an ankle injury sustained during the Quicksilver Pro France last year.
From a press release:
Between Christmas and New Years Day there were some epic sessions at Graviere as well as Peniche and Ericeira in Portugal, where he surfed alongside Aritz Aranburu and Patrick Beven.
One thing for everyone to look forward to in Ericeira this summer is Sumol Summer Fest 2012, which is set to take place on the 29th and 30th of June at Ericeira Camping. Sumol Summer Fest is an outdoor event ‘dedicated to music of the beach and reggae’. Also a certain fizzy orange drink, I’m guessing.
This year’s Sumol Summer Fest line-up has yet to be announced. We await it with baited breath. Our whole team will be there Surfcamp Portugal
