The second stage of the Billabong-sponsored surfing competition Circuito Inter-Sócios Ericeira Surf Clube took place last weekend at Ribeira D’Ilhas beach in Ericeira, Portugal.
Although three finalists from the first stage were absent, the competition saw Portuguese locals perform well on the famous peaks of Ribeira D’Ilhas in the Open category. Four surfers – John Júnior, Guilherme Fonseca, Nuno Gonçalves and Luís Reis – cemented their slots for the finals of the tournament.
In the Longboard division Bruno Charneca scored highest, with Eurico Gonçalves e João Carvalho also advancing. In quarterfinals for the over 35, aka Masters category, 8 surfers qualified for the semis.

In women’s surfing a new Miss Sumol was crowned at the Costa Nova beach in Ílhavo, northern Portugal.
Maria Abecasis of Estoril won in the finals of the last (fifth) stage of the Liga Meo Pro, which also took place this past weekend under the auspices of the Miss Sumol Cup. Ericeira’s own Carina Duarte finished in second place, followed by Constança Coutinho and Camila Kemp of Surfing Clube da Costa do Sol and Guincho, respectively.
In the running for Portugal’s female national surfing title, the standings – much like the Miss Sumol Cup results – have Estoril’s Maria Abecasis in first place and Ericeira’s Carina Duarte in second.
Other prizewinners in the competition include Sara Solá of Aveiro, who became the first Miss Simpatia (Miss Sympathy) having not reached the quarterfinals. Guincho’s Camilla Kemp, who finished fourth in the Miss Sumol Cup, won the Liga Meo Pro Surf 2012 qualifiers.
